A Little Girl & Her Wagon

The day after her birthday party, we took Elise and her new wagon for a spin to the park here in town.  She was having a fabulous time being pulled around the pond, sporting her shades, and checking out the ducks.

Elise's One Year Birthday Party

On Saturday, October 23, we had Elise's birthday party here at our house from 3-5pm.  The weather was perfect.  It was warm and sunny.  We took a few pictures before all the guests started to arrive.

I ordered some decorations from www.birthdaydirect.com and was very happy with them!  The night before Elise's party, we had a mini craft-making session.  With help from my mom and Jason, I made some tissue paper flowers to add to the decorations on the snack/cake table.

The Menu
Black Bean & Mango Salsa with Tortilla Chips
Fruit K-Bobs made with Strawberries, Mandarin Oranges, Pineapple, Honeydew Melon, Grapes
Meats, Cheeses, and Crackers
Assorted Cookies
Chocolate Cake with Buttercream Icing

Everyone made their plates, and Jason and then I helped Elise open her presents.

Elise got some great toys for her birthday!  A Princess Coupe, a pink John Deere Wagon, Fisher Price Stride and Ride Dino, lots of clothes, Learn to Play Puppy, and lots of other great toys!  We are going to pack up some of her old toys to take to her Nana & Grandpa's house to make room.

After gift opening, we had to quickly get to the birthday cake because Elise was getting a little fussy and distracted.  I stripped her down and set her in high chair.  We sang "Happy Birthday" to her and gave her her personal cake.  While she was working on that, everyone else had cake and ice cream.

Before everyone left, I wanted our family and close friends to see a video I made of Elise's pictures throughout her first year.  I played it on our TV for everyone.  (Be sure to turn your sound up on the computer!)

I'd say the party was a success, even though it had its stressful moments!  It was a great celebration for our little girl's first year!

A Tribute to One Year, Part III

My doctor called Labor & Delivery over at the hospital to tell them I was on my way over.  I wondered "can we go get something to eat before we go over there?"  I got a look from Jason and "I don't think you are supposed to eat anything in case they have to do an emergency C-Section.  They don't want you to aspirate on the table."  Awww, words of encouragement.

We parked and made our way up to the 3rd floor.  I told them who I was and was shown to my room.  From that moment on, it was procedures, paperwork, and questions, IV's, clothes changing, etc.  Those nurses are like a pit crew.  Each one has their own assignment and they are all working on you at the same time.

I was told to take everything off and put on the hospital gown.  And to go pee, because it would be the last time I would get to until delivery... that was not what I wanted to hear.  Evidently if your water has broken you are bound to the bed for safety reasons.

I had my IV going, a monitor for the baby's heart beat, and a monitor for contractions.  They took my blood pressure again and had to call my OB to see what she wanted to do because it was so high.  She said she wanted a urine sample to make sure I didn't have preeclampsia.  Well, I wasn't able to get up to pee because of the previously mentioned reasons.  My nurse, Kristin, told me I could go ahead and get my epidural (even though I was only dilated to 1 cm) or they could straight cath me.  Epidural please and thank you!

They had to sent some of my blood down to the lab and were waiting for it to come back.  In the meantime, they had paged the anesthesiologist.  He showed up and prepped me while we waited for the blood results.  He was getting impatient and sent the nurse to check on it.  Evidently it hadn't even been sent through so they put a rush on it and the anesthesiologist said to page him again once it was back.  He came back in and began the procedure for my epidural.  It wasn't a pleasant experience, but I survived.

They gave me a large bolus of the medicine to get me numb.  My nurse kept asking me all these questions about how I was feeling to make sure I wasn't having any adverse reactions.  I thought I was fine, but then I said "I....feel.......like..I........can't.............breathe."  Then all of the sudden I had a room full nurses working on me, pumping drugs through my IV, and checking on the baby.  After I had stabilized, my nurse said the medicine had caused my blood pressure to dramatically drop and put my baby in distress.  Her exact words were "your baby did not like that.  Did we scare you?"  I started crying and said "yes, is she ok?"  They got her back on the monitors and everything was going fine.

They got the urine sample when they put my catheter in after the epidural.  It was tested, but the levels were all fine.  My parents showed up a little while later and brought Jason a cheeseburger and fries... I got to eat ice chips.  After he ate, he left to get the car seat installed.  We had planned on getting it done that day after my scheduled doctor appointment before we knew we would be going to the hospital to have a baby.

Hours had passed without much progress, so they called my doctor and started some pitocin.  However, that ended up making my contractions go bizerk. So, they turned it off.  They were having a hard time getting the external monitors to get what they needed on the baby, so they had to insert 2 internal monitors.  One on the baby's head and one next to her.  My doctor came in around 5:30pm to see me.  She said she thought it would be a late night and we'd have a baby between that time and 8am.  The nurses went through shift change and my parents left to go check on our dogs and get a hotel.

My epidural was wearing off, I was uncomfortable and crying, and asking for the nurse to put some more medicine in the epidural.  She informed me that the anesthesiologist was in surgery and they had a page into him, but it would be a while.  While I tossed and turned I told her I had some pressure.  She said she was going to send my nurse in to check me.  "Shalee" came in, checked me, and said it's time to have a baby.  I was like "WHAT?! NOW?!"  She said "don't push, act like you're going to blow out birthday candles if you need to push.  I'm going to call Dr. Appel."  I started freaking out and asking her if she was going to make it in time and if it was going to be her or the on-call doctor.

I couldn't tell how long it was, but it seemed like just a short time that had passed when my doctor came in and told me to push.  I had to push for 20 minutes...I heard her say "page, nursery" and then when she said, "if you can do one more, I think we'll have her."  I grunted and told her I could do one more, and then at 9:39pm Elise was here!

She weighed 5lbs. 15oz. and was 18 1/2in. long.

One year birthday post and pictures to follow!

A Tribute to One Year, Part II

The following morning, Monday, October 26, Jason got up at his usual time (6am) to go work out before work.  As he was telling me bye he said

"are you ok?  You were tossing and turning all night."

I wasn't ok.  I groaned "Noooooooo"

He kissed me goodbye and said he'd talk to me later... he was never worried at all throughout this ordeal.  Which was a little annoying, now looking back.

Being the dedicated, hard worker that I am, I drug myself out of bed, showered, put on the minimal amount of make-up, and blow dried my hair.  I had to stop and sit down every once in while from the contractions, but I managed to get to work.

I was trying to do a few morning duties at the office, but had to stop and sit down at the computer.  I just laid my head down on the keyboard, and a lady I worked with came in and asked me how I was doing.

"I think I'm in labor..." more moaning and groaning.

Her response: "are you serious?"  but then she hurried back up front to her desk.

So, I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea to start timing my contractions.  They were about 6-7 minutes apart, and after my friend came in that worked with me, I realized that I couldn't talk through them.  I hadn't called my doctor prior to any of this because I had a routine OB check-up that same day at 3:30pm and thought I could wait until then... wrong.

So, I called and talked to the nurse, Sally, and explained it all to her.  She told me to come in at 10am.  I called Jason and told him how far apart they were and that we were to be at the doctor's office at 10am.  We agreed to meet at home around 9:30am because I wanted to take my hospital bag.  Jason still wasn't worried or stressed.  He just knew this would be the first of several false alarms.

I got home, changed my clothes, and gathered the last remaining items to throw in my bag.  Jason, however did not change his clothes, did not pack a bag, nothing.  We started heading up to Amarillo to the doctor's office.  I made some phone calls to let my family know what was going on, but was having a hard time talking.  I told Jason "Quit hitting all the bumps!"  Jason started to notice when I was having a contraction and began timing them.  He started writing down all the times they started on his hand.  He continued this while we waited in the waiting room... and while I sat there squirming and breaking a sweat.  He could tell by my face and expression when a contraction would start and finish.

They finally called me back, and Jason thought he was sooooooo funny and showed the nurse his "Roll-a-dex of my contractions on his hand."  She took my blood pressure, which was high... probably because I was in pain, but they take that high BP seriously on pregnant women.

My doctor came in and checked me.  She said she thought my water had broken and was going to test the fluid to be sure.  We sat and waited...

She came back in and said "I hope you brought your bags because we're gonna have a baby today!"

Well, one of us had brought our bag.

A Tribute To One Year, Part I

"All Five hundred twenty-five thousand Six hundred minutes,
Five hundred twenty-five thousand Moments so dear.
Five hundred twenty-five thousand Six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?

This year, the best year of my entire life, was measured in diapers, wipes, bottles, onesies, smiles, kisses, crawls, and steps.  With that being said, I am going to do a series of posts that recall the events of what happened exactly one year ago to each date ending with Elise's birthday.  All complete with photos that everyone has probably already seen.  I am probably doing it more for myself and Elise (when she's older) than for my readers.  It is bittersweet that my little baby is turning one year old, so I want to hold on to those precious moments of when she was first born. I will start out the series with the weekend that led up to the Monday that Elise was born.

On Saturday, October 24, 2009, 18 days before my due date I woke up around 11am.  Because at that point all I wanted to do was sleep and lay around.  Jason had been gone for work since about 7am.  I stood up out of bed and thought "hmm.... what was that?  I think I just peed a little."  Went to the bathroom and still wasn't sure.  Anyway, I went on with my normal activities... eating and laying around.  In the back of my mind I kept thinking I was leaking fluid, but wasn't sure.  I did a little Googling, but it wasn't a whole lot of help.  I called Jason and explained the situation to him.

"hey, I think I might be leaking fluid or something.  At first I thought I could have peed my pants, but now I  don't think so."

"ohh... hmm.  Well, are you worried about it?"

"I don't know, maybe a little, should I be?"

"I don't know?  Call me if anything changes"

"ok, bye"

I guess if he wasn't worried about it, I wouldn't be either??  Since Jason was planning on being gone all day I thought I'd run up to BRU and get a few more things for the baby.  I was fine wandering around the store, Jason finally came home, and all was well.

October 25, 2009

Sunday was a little different.  I wasn't feeling the greatest and was pretty exhausted.  But nevertheless, I wanted a Dr. Pepper.  I had been feeling a little crampy throughout the day and told Jason I thought I was having contractions.  Still no worry on his behalf, so we drove to Wendy's so I could get a huge Dr. Pepper.  We got home and started making dinner when I was certain I was having contractions.  They weren't regular at that point and not painful, just annoying.  We ate chicken strips and mac & cheese for dinner.  Little did I know that would be the last thing I would eat for about 28 hours.  We went to bed and everything seemed fine.  I did not sleep well at all that night...

The Pumpkin Patch

Here's our trip to the pumpkin patch in pictures.  TONS of pictures, a wardrobe and hairdo change, but despite our efforts, NO smiles.  Elise was less than impressed.
